Downtown redevelopment scheme shelved !

The Bend power structure's plan to steamroll the new Mirror Pond dam hit a bump in the road on July 2.

The Oregon State Legislature rejected a $5 million bill to fund Mirror Pond preservation and the associated scheme to redevelop downtown Bend.

On March 18, a crowd of a hundred citizens jammed the Bend City Council Chambers.  75% of those who offered public testimony spoke eloquently against the so-called "preferred alternative" that would drastically redevelop downtown Bend, construct a new Mirror pond dam, and preserve the pond.  Though the City Council that evening voted to continue to support the "preferred alternative," it did so by the narrowest of majorities and took a sharp turn from a previous unanimous vote to support the dam.
